A couple weeks ago, I found myself driving before dawn in the pounding rain, on a winding unlit road in the middle of nowhere, Texas, vaguely wondering, "Might I actually die out here?"—and then I saw a gas station. Your essay captures how that gas station made me feel. And it made me love civilization and think that the primitivists are outta their damned minds. Yes, please, push back against Nature's dumb dark.

On a peripheral note, I have sometimes referred to Chili's as an embassy of Nowhere. If you're in a new town or city and feel disoriented, then grab a beer at a Chili's.

I liked this story. Might inspire me to recount the story of my trip to Bairnsdale without enough fuel in the middle of the night. Driving really slowly to save fuel saved several wombats I would otherwise have hit at speed. Keep me up to it.
